1. Please clear your snow from your doorways. You are liable if someone falls. Residents are complaining see an example below.
I try to shop locally and do whenever I can. But I have to share my frustration with you from my experience today. Nobody clears the sidewalk of snow in front of their business anymore. The sidewalk on the north side has a prominent grade to the street so when it is slippery it is not a solid footing as you walk. I try to be positive but this lack of respect for customers and for the extra effort so many make for local business over the mall is shameful. I will continue to shop locally when I can, but if I see the sidewalks are not clear, I'm getting in my car and going to the big box stores at St. Clair and Lansdowne. As the BIA I suggest you coordinate an effort among members to not only clear the sidewalk, but to make a campaign that could lead the whole city to follow your good example.
2. A-Frame Sign Marketing Permits. If you use a sandwich board to market your business then you must have a license from the City of Toronto. The sign must also be in close proximity to your building. A fine carrying a maximum of $5000.00 can be issued for not complying.
Of note, the BWV BIA and the City of Toronto have been named in a $250,000 lawsuit for an injury caused by a fall on our sidewalk – BWV is covered by the City of Toronto’s insurance. With this lawsuit, it is possible that the City Bylaw officers will focus on non-compliance in our area and issue fines. Please go to the City website and apply for a permit. The cost is approx $120 per year.
