Sleep Struggles Sleep is critical to a child’s cognitive, emotional and social development. Young children need at least 11 hours of sleep every night. Yet, sleep problems are among the most frequently reported struggles for parents. Issues like anxiety, busy schedules, school changes or other transitions can make bedtime challenging for everyone. A few tips can aid the transition and help everyone get a good night’s sleep: • Make efforts to connect with your child during the day so that they don’t need to do this when they should be sleeping. • There is nothing wrong with using a night-light if your child is nervous about the dark. • Start to ‘wind-down’ the activity level of your household about an hour before bed-time. This is not the time for wrestling or physical games! • Try making yoga or mindfulness exercises a part of your bet-time routine. Yoga is a great way to teach kids how to relax and calm down. (A great book to introduce kids to yoga is: Sitting Still Like a Frog by Elaine Snel).
